In the last 15 years or so the IRS has made an effort to nullify it's image as all thats wrong with the government.

They are charged with one mission, collect the taxes that congress proposes. They have this huge list of rules they have to abide by.

So it's no surprise that they embraced electronic filing.
With this they were able to streamline their process. Instead of waiting for countless data entry personnel to enter paper forms (introducing a point of error), returns can be processed electronically and flagged for review if necessary. If no review a payment (if warranted) is triggered.

I received my Federal return in 9 days. Filed on Sunday afternoon, confirmation Sunday evening. Refund in the bank the next Tuesday.
My state return, Illinois, took about 5 days.

I think that if all government worked this well there would be no national deficit.

Oh, the EASY life of those getting a tax return!

I had to PAY the IRS $4700 this year :/ It's better than loaning money to them, I believe, but still. If I hadn't saved for my taxes, I would be in a hard place this year!

I filed my taxes back in February and the deposit showed up exactly on the date their form promised. TurboTax provided this information as well. I was pleased with TurboTax this year as well, I even blogged about it: http://debtfreethisyear.blogspot.com/2008/03/cutting-expenses-turbotax.html
